History of Duncan Housing Society

Duncan Housing Society (DHS) is a local non-profit that has been providing services in Duncan for nearly 50 years. Duncan Manor, located at 280 First Street, Duncan, is home to one 122-unit residential building. The development was opened 43 years ago, to provide affordable independent living for seniors (55+) and persons living with disabilities. DHS took over ownership and operations of Duncan Manor from the City of Duncan Housing Corporation.

Duncan Manor

DHS currently owns and operates Duncan Manor, a 122-unit residential building near downtown Duncan.

The Manor needs major cost-prohibitive repairs and investments, including new plumbing, electrical systems and roof require replacement. The building and units lack accessibility features that are standard in newer buildings. 48 of the 122 units lack kitchens, fridges, and private bathrooms.

The Duncan Manor building has reached the end of its lifecycle and is in need of replacement. For the past four years, DHS has been pursing funding to construct a new building to eventually replace the aging Duncan Manor building.

In 2020, DHS submitted a proposal to BC Housing to construct a new building with 133 Independent Living affordable rental units. This funding would allow for the creation of a new building to replace Duncan Manor and the eventual construction of a second affordable rental building.

The Community Housing Fund is a very competitive program and DHS is very fortunate to have the opportunity to work towards the construction of a much-needed new building with essential features and amenities that help enable every tenant to live independently.
